2023 Begins

Happy New Year! How is your year going so far? I hope it has got off to a good start. I have had a great first week to the year. I'm feeling energised and inspired.

For me, a new year means a new diary so it's the perfect opportunity to begin the Diarist merit badge for Rebel Badge Club. I regularly keep a diary already but I don't always write in it on a daily basis and sometimes I give up completely part way through the year. So for at least six months I will write in my diary every day.

It appears I have now started the Builder badge too. For Christmas, my husband bought me a Hedwig Lego set. I had my eye on the large collector's edition of Hedwig but at £259.99 it was a bit on the expensive side so the smaller version was a more sensible choice. I started building small Hedwig on New Year's Day and completed it a few days ago. I loved doing the Lego set. I found it a very enjoyable and satisfying task. If it wasn't for the Rebel Badge Club, I would never have thought to play with Lego as an adult. But seeing other Rebels Lego masterpieces inspired me to give it a go.

I think he is rather cute and his wings move up and down too when you turn the handles. I'm looking forward to doing more Lego sets, hopefully in the near future.

I've been listening to audiobooks every day since starting the Good Habits badge in November. I'm also doing the Reader badge alongside this. At present, I am listening to Peace Is Every Step by Thich Nhat Hanh. This is my seventh book since starting the Reader badge. So far I have listened to biographies and non-fiction books but have yet to read a fiction book. I want to read an actual book rather than just listen to audiobooks so I have the paperback version of Rebel Skies by Ann Sei Lin next on my reading list. The name of the book is what first caught my attention and also the cover artwork. The bird on the front reminds me of my Lego Hedwig coincidently too. The synopsis of the book sounds interesting and it also has good reviews.

Whilst I have been doing well with my self care habit (reading / listening to audiobooks) and life admin habit (keeping a spending log) my health and fitness habit (regularly do yoga / walk in nature) and household habit (keeping on top of the washing and ironing) have waned slightly in the last few weeks. Overall though, each good habit has improved in comparison to before I started the Good Habits badge so I'm giving myself brownie points (or Rebel points!) for that.

To date I have completed two Rebel merit badges and am currently working on five others. Working on multiple badges at once requires some organisation so at the weekend I turned my art desk into a badgemin (badge admin) desk / creative space. At the moment I'm not planning on starting any other badges until I've started completing some of the ones I'm already doing. I have decided to display my completed badges on the wall above my badgemin desk. I've also put some of my own artwork on the wall. What do you think?

Calligraphy

A few months ago I mentioned in my blog that I attended a calligraphy workshop. This workshop was the start of my Craft badge journey. At the time I did not know how hard calligraphy was to master using a nib pen and ink. The workshop was held at Lytham Hall by Mellor & Rose. Beverley and Lucy Mellor taught the basics of modern calligraphy which included how to hold the pen correctly and a series of worksheets were provided for practice. I found holding the pen so unnatural as I don't normally hold my pen in such a way. My practice strokes were terribly shaky at the workshop and they still are even after months of practice! I have better control over the ink now though and leave less splodges on the page. Although I am finding learning calligraphy a tough challenge I am determined to improve.  In my determination to master calligraphy to some degree, I have signed up to a six month subscription to The Calligraphy Box. The monthly box contains materials and a two hour video less...

Origami

As I found some lovely origami paper in a shop during a recent holiday in Portugal, I decided to try my hand at some origami for the Rebel Badge Club's Craft badge. I used online tutorials to create hearts, boxes, boats, butterflies, a crane, a swan and a turtle by folding paper. I also made a house and a rabbit. The craft was enjoyable to do and a pleasant way to unwind after work in the evening. Some of the more complex origami models didn't work out so well with the paper I used as it was too thick and bulky to fold neatly. The best thing to do with those attempts was to throw them straight in the bin. My favourites to make were the hearts and the boxes. I now have quite a collection of paper hearts and boxes in my possession for which I hope to find a purpose for in the future.

Sculpture

Today I completed this wire rabbit sculpture. I bought the wire rabbit kit from artist Zack Mclaughlin. It's worth checking out Zack's website www.paperandwood.co.uk as his creations are stunning. I have never made anything like this before. I hope I did his rabbit justice. The first step of the kit was the most difficult. I had to bend the wire into various shapes using a template. The wire was hard to bend into the correct shape and I could not do this as accurately as I would have liked. I really did not enjoy this first step and at this point was unsure if the sculpture was going to work out at all. The next stages of the wire sculpture were a lot more fun. I really enjoyed seeing the rabbit take form even though it was a bit fiddly at times having to hold parts in place when wrapping the wire round to secure them. I kept going and my patience finally paid off. The instructions were easy to understand, even for me as someone who can get confused easily! I would defi...
