Portrait

It has taken me a while but I have finally completed a second project for my Artist badge. I have drawn a portrait in coloured pencil of the iconic model Twiggy. I haven't done a full colour human portrait since my days at uni so my confidence was lacking and my skills a bit rusty during this task.

I spent quite a lot of time on the drawing, completing an hour or two here and there. I struggle to focus on drawing for long periods of time and to be honest I didn't really enjoy doing the portrait. The only part I can say I did enjoy was colouring in the earrings as this felt more relaxing and required less intense focus. Another reason I found the portrait difficult was because the quality of the print out I was drawing the image from wasn't very good and it was difficult to see details in the image. I was looking at a digital image on my phone some of the time for better clarity but this was a bit of an awkward method of doing things.

However, even though I didn't really enjoy this task as much as I thought I would I do feel happy with the final drawing. It isn't perfect for a number of reasons such as the bottom lip isn't quite the right shape and both the eyes aren't quite right. Also the skin tone is rather pale. I considered attempting to correct these things but sometimes it's best just to leave things be. In trying to fix things, it is possible to make things worse instead. My drawing isn't perfect but that's okay.

Calligraphy

A few months ago I mentioned in my blog that I attended a calligraphy workshop. This workshop was the start of my Craft badge journey. At the time I did not know how hard calligraphy was to master using a nib pen and ink. The workshop was held at Lytham Hall by Mellor & Rose. Beverley and Lucy Mellor taught the basics of modern calligraphy which included how to hold the pen correctly and a series of worksheets were provided for practice. I found holding the pen so unnatural as I don't normally hold my pen in such a way. My practice strokes were terribly shaky at the workshop and they still are even after months of practice! I have better control over the ink now though and leave less splodges on the page. Although I am finding learning calligraphy a tough challenge I am determined to improve.  In my determination to master calligraphy to some degree, I have signed up to a six month subscription to The Calligraphy Box. The monthly box contains materials and a two hour video less...

Origami

As I found some lovely origami paper in a shop during a recent holiday in Portugal, I decided to try my hand at some origami for the Rebel Badge Club's Craft badge. I used online tutorials to create hearts, boxes, boats, butterflies, a crane, a swan and a turtle by folding paper. I also made a house and a rabbit. The craft was enjoyable to do and a pleasant way to unwind after work in the evening. Some of the more complex origami models didn't work out so well with the paper I used as it was too thick and bulky to fold neatly. The best thing to do with those attempts was to throw them straight in the bin. My favourites to make were the hearts and the boxes. I now have quite a collection of paper hearts and boxes in my possession for which I hope to find a purpose for in the future.

Sculpture

Today I completed this wire rabbit sculpture. I bought the wire rabbit kit from artist Zack Mclaughlin. It's worth checking out Zack's website www.paperandwood.co.uk as his creations are stunning. I have never made anything like this before. I hope I did his rabbit justice. The first step of the kit was the most difficult. I had to bend the wire into various shapes using a template. The wire was hard to bend into the correct shape and I could not do this as accurately as I would have liked. I really did not enjoy this first step and at this point was unsure if the sculpture was going to work out at all. The next stages of the wire sculpture were a lot more fun. I really enjoyed seeing the rabbit take form even though it was a bit fiddly at times having to hold parts in place when wrapping the wire round to secure them. I kept going and my patience finally paid off. The instructions were easy to understand, even for me as someone who can get confused easily! I would defi...
